Word 2000 Issue

default set at "English (U.S.)"!

The language of your document is probably set to French (that's how
they do it).
Assuming 2000 is a lot like 2003, select your whole document (Ctrl-A),
go to Tools Language Set Language, and pick one of the English
varieties.
