I too have recently started having this problem ( I am using Office
2000
Premium): whenever I try to open Word or a Word document the taskbar
shows
"requesting virus scan" and the program stops responding. If I leave
it alone
and do something else, Word will open after about 12 minutes, but is
then
liable to hang at the slightest provocation. (Incidentally Excel
also
"requests a virus scan" but this takes less than a second.)
I note there are many posts on this subject scattered across the
groups, but
99% of these relate to an incompatibility with Norton Antivirus: I
have never
had NAV on my PC and use the free version of AVG. I have tried
unticking the
"scan documents" box in AVG but this seems to make no difference
except bring
up a dire warning that my PC is unprotected. I have also tried a
repair
installation of Office and deleted the "normal.dot" file but neither
had any
effect. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've had exactly this problem in the last few days with Word 2002. As
you say, 99% of solutions refer to Norton, but I run AVG7 Free. Tried
all the usual, and not so usual fixes, and got so confused in the end
I don't recall where I saw the eventual answer.
Rather than delete 'normal.dot', the advice was to rename it
'normal.old' - subsequently Word produces a new 'normal.dot' and
'requesting virus scan' lock-up disappears!
Worked for me - hope it does for you.
