Default Searching Word 2007 docs for words in docs

I have several documents saved in Word 2007 format, .docx, and I have
found that the Windows Explorer search function does not find a "word
of text in the document" in any of them, even tho I know the search
item is in some of the documents. I find the words when they are in
older style .doc documents.

The same thing happens when I use AgentRansack, and also did when I
tried Cool Find.

I have gone thru the whole routine of changing "FilterFilesWith
UnknownExtensions" from 0 to1 in RegEdit, and that hasn't worked
either.

Best I can see, it has something to do with the .docx files being in
Unicode, or in some other arcane format unique to Word 2007, that is
not the same as ASCII or ANSI.

I would hate to have to go thru all my files and save them in 2003
format so I can search them, because the .docx files are much shorter
in terms of KBs.

Does anybody know of some software that can search for text in .docx
and .docm files, or something I can do to my Word to make it save in
ASCII (other than selecting "plain text"), but not lose the economy of
file size?
