Default Autocomplete screen tips just stop working in Word 2003

To further clarify, "AutoComplete" is a function associated with AutoText
entries; AutoCorrect is what you apparently mean by "autocomplete" in this
message.

Oh my goodness. Your file is absolutely huge! I wonder if that's part of
the problem?

Also, the link I provided previously was for autocomplete. Sorry, I got
confused with another post. Graham is correct, you are talking about
autotext, not autocomplete entries.

However, with that many autotext entries, it's important to save them in a
template separate from the normal.dot file, as the normal template is VERY
prone to corruption.

I realize this is a lot to deal with, but I think your only alternative to
the steps below is to use F3 from here out. Forgive the length, but I

like
to provide complete instructions rather than force someone to figure it

out.

The new template should be located he

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup (for Office 2000)
change to Office10 for 2002
change Office11 for 2003

From a blank doc in Word, just do a file save as, select template from the
"Save as type" drop down box, and manuever the the correct path stated

above,
name it and save.

It's really not that big of a deal to export/import the autotext - they

can
all be selected with just a couple of key strokes. Just use the Organizer

to
copy the entries to the brand new template file as follows:

1. Tools, Templates and Add-Ins, Autotext tab.
2. In the left-hand column, if your new template (not .doc, must be a

..dot)
is not showing in the €śAutotext Available In€ť field, click on the Close

File
button, when it turns into an Open File button, select it again, and

locate
the new template.
3. In the right-hand column, highlight every single entry by clicking on
the top entry, use the scroll bar to move to the bottom, then hold down

the
Shift key and single click on the last entry.
4. Select the Copy button
5. If you have any macros and/or styles, do the same under each of those
tabs.
5. Select the Close button and answer yes to the save document prompt, if
any.

Exit Word and rename your old normal template (just in case you missed
something and need to access it again).

Now go back into Word and see if it's all working. If not, go into
Templates and Add-Ins and make sure it has a check mark next to your new
template (it should be on the list - if not, make sure you saved the new
template to the correct path).

To insert new autotext entries into the new template: When creating
autotext, you will need to do it the long way by blocking the text, then
Insert, Autotext, Autotext, and select your new template from the Look in
drop down box. Then choose the Add button. When you exit Word, make sure
you answer yes to save changes to the template.

Please let us know what you decide to do.

Best of luck.

By 'autocomplete' you presumably mean 'Autotext'. Autotexts are stored

in
templates - usually normal.dot. Yours appears to be corrupt. Rename
normal.dot to oldnormal.dot then use the Organizer to copy the autotext
entries from the old one to the new one that Word will create.

Thanks, both of you - Graham and zkid.
I have worked through all these suggestions - but without great
success. The problem is definitely something to do with my Normal.dot
template because, when I create a new one as suggested, the screen
tips show again. But backing up Autocorrect entries, though useful,
does not help with Autocomplete entries, which are extensive (my
template is 2,759 KB in size) and, for the work I do,
mission-critical as they say.

Yes, indeed. I'm not a beginner! Everything worked well until one
day this week - when the screen tips simply stopped working. That's
why it feels like a bug. It has happened before ... and then one
day it comes back again. Hmmph.

Do you have the 'show Autocomplete suggestions' check box checked
in tools autocorrect options autotext?
Do your autotext names share the same leading characters? The names
have to have at least four unique characters in order to display
the tip. If the first four characters are shared by another entry
name you have to keep typing until the string becomes unique.
If all else fails you can pick them from the menu

Autocomplete doesn't work by itself, i.e. with a screen tip
followed by enter. It works only m,anually - by my pressing F3.

"zkid" wrote:

Hmmm, okay. At least you know the autotext is still there.

Does the autocomplete work if the cursor is not up against
another word? As far as I know, It think that's correct
behavior.

"mvlturner" wrote:

Yes. F3 activates the autocomplete manually ... but I have to
remember all the autocompletes!
However, if the cursor is adjacent to the following word, then
F3 does NOT activate ther autocomplete, whereas the screen tip,
when working, will enter the text at the cursor.

"zkid" wrote:

Will it expand if you press F3 after the first few characters?

Is this a bug? Sometimes screen tips just stop showing on
screen (but dates ... January, September etc) keep showing
their screen tips!
