Default TOC How to add chapter number before chapter heading?

I believe the assumption in this thread is that the OP makes use of *two*
styles for headings: one with the chapter number, for example "Chapter I,"
and one with the chapter title, for example "INTRODUCTION." In such a case,
the usual work-around is the one that Suzanne has presented: include only
the title paragraph in the TOC and then add numbering directly to the
corresponding TOC style.

In the TOC for the dissertation the grad school requires this format
(with
doublespace between each line of TOC)

CHAPTER
I. INTRODUCTION...................................... ....1
Statement of Problem.............................3
Importance of Study...............................4
II. BACKGROUND........................................ ...5

But the chapter number and title are on two different lines. The TOC
is
coming from Styles - Level 5 is Chapter Number and Chapter Title, Level
4, is
Chapter Sections, etc. I tried using Numbering but that disappears
when I
update the TOC. Is there some field switch that will put in a chapter
number
in Roman numerals?

I would appreciate some help.

Terri:
The chapter numbering and TOC numbering shd be similar, obviously, so
the chapter numbering shd be set to Roman on the appropriate levels.
Assuming you have Chapter numbering correctly set up (see
www.shaunakelly.com), go to the Style Level 5 -
Modify/Numbering../Outline Numbered/Customize. Then under Number style
choose the Roman style. HTH, henk
