What symbols?
Two things to try:
a. click the "pilcrow" button (if you can't see this character "ΒΆ" it
looks a bit like a reverse "P") on the main toolbar or the Word 2007
Home tab. This should hide the symbols that Word uses when you want to
be able to see what "white space" characters, such as spaces, tabs and
paragraph marks are in your document.
b. if you are seeing these { }, they may be "field code braces" and
you can try using Alt-F9 to show the field results rather than the field
codes.
