I just wanted to thank you for your post here. I had the same problem, and
I've been hunting off-and-on for several days trying to find a solution.
Your suggestion works. I agree with Stephen, though, most people would not
have looked for the solution with that checkmark.

Very recently Word started without showing the header and footer in page
layout view. I have to do it manually - View/headerand footer. When I open
New/Blank document it is the same. However opening Normal.dot displays H & F
as it used to be.
