Guessing that this is Word 2007 and the "banner" is what Word calls the
"ribbon"...
Press Ctrl+F1
-or-
Double-click any tab (the words "Home", "Insert", etc.)
-or-
Right-click any tab and click "Minimize the Ribbon" to turn it off.
