I want to advance along the same "thread":
How would I "overlay" one these newly converted TEMPLATES onto an existing
document, so that the document will thereafter assume all they style of the
template?
For example: I prepare various types of legal documents. Oftentimes they
start out as a check list of required items that my client sends me in a WORD
letter. Usually those were originally crafted using a particular OUTLINE
NUMBERING style -- but one which I does not work with the document I wish to
create.
In WORD 2003, I would simply click on the TOOLS button and then open up the
TEMPLATE window, and select a different TEMPLATE -- my OUTLINE NUMBERED
TEMPLATE and -- Voila! -- the entire document is automatically converted over
to my STYLE -- FONT, different sized fonts for HEADINGS, indents, etc. etc.
I have been trying for 4 days to discover how to to this in WORD 2007 --
with no luck.
The closest I came was creating a "NEW" document using my TEMPLATE and then
COPYING the other document texted outline onto it. ALAS, in doing so, the
transition was not smooth at all -- some levels of outline worked, some did
not. LEVEL 3 disappeared entirely!!
Very frustrating.
Can you point me in the right direction? Is there a road?

template's name.
Now click the Office icon (File menu) and choose the Convert command.
The template will be upgraded to 2007 format, and the "(Compatibility
Mode)" notation will disappear.
Finally, use File Save As to save the upgraded template. If it
doesn't contain macros, save it in the default .dotx format. If it
does contain macros, you have to manually change the "Save as type"
box in the Save As dialog to save it in the macro-enabled .dotm format
(you'll get a warning box first).
There shouldn't be any problem bringing along styles. Maybe the
template's styles just aren't being shown in the ribbon. Press
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S (or click the little button at the bottom right
corner of the Styles section of the ribbon) to open the Styles task
pane, and then click the third button at the bottom (tooltip "Manage
Styles"). That will show a list of all the currently defined styles,
and lets you manage which ones will be shown in what order.
