Default dictionary problem

Hi Klim,

I am using Word 2000 9.0.6926 SP-3 in Windows XP.

When spell checking, I cannot add words to the dictionary because the
ADD button is grayed out. This is in both the right click drop down
menu and in the larger spell check box. It used to work. What happened
and does anyone know how to fix it?

One common reason is that the text is formatted with a different
language than the custom dictionary supports. If you click in some text
where the "Add" button isn't working, then go to Tools/Language/Set
language, which language is selected (or, you might also see it in the
Status bar).

Now go to Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar/Dictionaries:

1. Is there a dictionary in the list? If there's not, this would explain
why "Add" is not available - there's no place to add a word. In this
case, add a new dictionary and see if that works.

2. If there is a dictionary, make sure the first one in the list is
selected. Now check what language is listed for it. Does it match the
language of the text, or is it different?

Note: you'd have gotten an answer much sooner if you'd posted in the
word.spelling.grammar newsgroup. And if my suggestions haven't helped,
please do search that newsgroup for questions like yours and see if the
answers those people got help. If not, post there again.
