Default Losing Formats, Excel to Word merge

In Word, click on the Office button and then on Word Options and then on
Advanced and scroll down to the General section and check the box against
the "Confirm file format conversion on open" item and then when you attach
the data source to the mail merge main document, choose the DDE option in
the dialog box that appears.

Using 2007 versions, Vista OS.

In Excel, I have a date column labeled DOB_1 in my database, and that
column
is formatted to display 'mmm dd, yyyy'. So, an entry of 9/5/2005 displays
as
'Sep 05, 2005'.

Up until today, when Mail Merging that Excel file to Word, the 'Sep 05,
2005' is what was shown in the final Merge doc. Now all of sudden, the
final
Merge doc is showing '9/5/2005', which is the Excel entry and NOT the cell
format display.

I just tried changing te mail merge field entry to { Mailmerge DOB_1\@
"mmm
dd, yyyy" } ..... but it had no effect.

There have been no updates to the Excel file or the Word mail merge
structure. So, why all of a sudden am I losing these display formats?

Thanks in advance for any help with this perplexing issue.
