Default Error message: "saving auto recovery file is postponed"

Thank you Graham. That's very helpful. Now, if I have my default directory
for saving Auto Recover function on the C drive, and my default document
directory as a different directory on the C drive, but working on a document
that I open from my flash drive, am I still going to get this message? (it
appears to be the case).

I gather from your warning that I should not even work from a document that
I open from the flash drive? Major annoyance, as I've worked out a system
that has solved my problem of maintaining consistency between home & office
work (basically I work from the 16GB flash drive regardless of whether at
home or office, and copy to my C drive at the end of the session). So
apparently I need to scrap this routine to avoid potentially calamitous data
loss with Word?

There is no 'autosave' in Word. What there is, is save auto-recovery
information and a 1 minute interval is too short. 10 minutes would be
better.
If you want to automatically save, there is a workaround -

Never work from removable media in Word it is a recipe for disastrous data
loss. Always copy to the hard drive and work from there, then copy back to
the flash drive. The above link also includes a macro to facilitate that.

I am getting the above error message every minute or so in my document.
It
stops everything in its tracks until you hit OK.
Word 2003, running on XP, updated through most current update
I am working off a flash drive: both my document and my custom template
are
on the flash drive. Could this be the problem.

I like auto save & have auto recover set to 1 minute in Options. Is Auto
Save the same as auto recover? must I give up Auto Save to work off of the
flash drive?
