Creating a Template with Auto-Fill in Microsoft Word
- Open a new document in Microsoft Word.
- Create the template for your memorandum, including any text, formatting, and placeholders for the information that needs to be auto-filled.
- To create a placeholder for the information that needs to be auto-filled, place your cursor where you want the information to appear and then click on the Insert tab in the ribbon.
- Click on the Quick Parts dropdown menu and select Field.
- In the Field dialog box, select MergeField from the list of field names.
- In the Field name box, type in a name for your placeholder (e.g. "To", "From", "Date", etc.) and click OK.
- Repeat steps 3-6 for each placeholder you want to create.
- Save your template by clicking on File in the ribbon and selecting Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, select Word Template from the Save as type dropdown menu.
- Give your template a name and click Save.
Using the Template to Create a Memorandum with Auto-Fill
- Open your template by clicking on File in the ribbon and selecting New.
- Select Personal from the list of templates and click on your template to open it.
- When you open the template, you will see that the placeholders you created are now highlighted in gray.
- Click on the first placeholder and type in the information that needs to be auto-filled.
- Repeat step 4 for each placeholder in the document.
- When you have filled in all of the placeholders, save your memorandum by clicking on File in the ribbon and selecting Save As.
- Give your memorandum a name and click Save.
