Default delete & backspace key not working properly

Perhaps she turned on "filter keys."

My 95 year old mother was working with her new Dell computer using Word
2002. She has Windows XP Media. When I installed Word on her computer, it
worked properly. Then she did something to cause some problems:

1) backspace key will only delete one character, then freezes
2) delete key only deletes one character, then will not work
3) Each key I click on the keyboard I hear a noise coming from the
computer.

I uninstalled Word, then reinstalled it..no luck. My Mom accidentally
altered something in Word because for 2 weeks this program worked
perfectly.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
