Okay, so it's probably not Normal.dot (since the "plain" Normal.dot is the
same thing you're getting with the /a switch). There could still be other
add-ins (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...sInstalled.htm), or the
problem could be in the Registry. The fact that there is no problem when you
start in Safe Mode or with the /a switch points to those three areas.

I am the only user on the system so there is no other normal.dot file at
play. I have attempted to remove all previous additions and customizations

eliminate the cause of the problem.
Word starts instantly and exits instantly when loaded with the /a switch
and
when run in safe mode. When he rerun word normally with the plan
normal.dot,
the same slowness occurs.
I hope this clarifies the situation.

Normal.dot is a hidden file in Word 2002 and 2003.
