Default Word 2007 inserts blank space at first location on every page

I should add that I have looked at the codes "behind" my document. On the
pages where the extra space does NOT exist, there are two paragraph marks and
the test starts in the third line location, on the pages where the extra
space does exist, the text starts immediately after the second paragraph
mark. Actually, I prefer there be no paragraph marks at all as it starts my
text too far down the page and changing the margins does not help. How can I
control these hidden paragraph marks?

line 1 moves down, the space is gone, but the new text will now have a space.
This space is visible both on the screen and the printed page. I have read
all the Word help files and many of the threads on this site and I don't see
this problem addressed anywhere. Can you help?
