Depending on your version of Word:

Word 2000 and earlier:
On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, check "Tabs and backspace set left
indent."

Word 2002 or 2003:
On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options, check the
box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."

When I create a bullet/number outline the tab does not indent to the next
bullet. It simply indents a normal tab. Typically, tab indents to the next
bullet and Shift+Tab goes back to the previous bullet. Any suggestions?
