Default Can Word Document allow multiple users to update at same time?

Word is not a multi-user application and no you cannot allow more than one
user to have full access to the document at a time.

This application seems to lend itself to the use of Outlook?

We use a Word document on our network as a place to post information
to other users about personnel out of the office or on vacation or to
schedule the use of conference rooms. The document works fine, but
will only allow write access for one user at a time. The problem is
that the document frequently is kept open by a user or the network
doesn't recognize that the user no longer has the file open.
This is stored on a Windows 2003 Server in a folder that allows
everyone full acess to files.
Can we set a time limit on the file to automatically close it after a
specified period, or is there a way to monitor the file on the server
to close it after it has been kept open for a specified time limit?
Can the file be set to allow multiple updates at the same time?
