Well ... just in case anyone else lands here with the same question, it is now possible to use Word's no-width optional break character to achieve this.

Ctrl+I, S (Insert Symbol)
Special Characters
No-width optional break

And of course, you can assign this to a keyboard shortcut of your choice.
