Cheryl,
A Word document of approximately 75 pages is not really a big document, I am
creating Word documents of over 250 page regularly. When you number your
pages you always use the footer even if you insert your page numbers with
Insert - page numbers. Try it, insert your page numbers and immediately go
to View header and footer, depending on the position you chose the numbers
will be in the header (top of the page) or the footer (bottom of the page).
You can number in the footer using the numbering you like, just click the
numbering button on the header and footer toolbar, the positioning can be
done using the tabs that are already set in the header/footer style, one in
the middle and one flush right with your right margin. But you can add tabs
to your hearts content and use them. If you want to format the number hit
the formatting numbers button, at the top of the dialogue you can choose the
numbering style you like.
Now as to the why your numbering is stopping at a certain page I can only
guess, but it could be that you have several sections in your document and
the numbering was omitted in these sections. To know whether you have
sections you can hit ctrl+end and look in the Word status bar, there should
be PgX and next to it Se (section)X if it is more than one you have several
sections. If so go to the header and footer toolbar, and hit the last button
(next section) if the header and footer is empty than hit the same as
previous button which will copy the header/footer to the current section if
you say yes of course.
Good luck,
Luc

We create large Word documents regularly. They usually have more than
60-75
pages. When we try to number the pages (not using a Footer), the numbers
stop at page 39. Someone told us that we should break the documents up
into
several smaller documents, but that is a pain because these documents are
legal briefs being filed in various courts and they need to be all in one
complete document.

Also, is there a way to use a Footer for page numbering without using the
'page x of y' feature in the Footer? We use Footers for smaller internal
documents for the 'page x of y' feature, but in briefs being filed in
court
documents, we must have a single arabic number for the page number.
