Default Word 2007 Heading Outline numbering

This one puzzled me too since what you have to do is so different from the
best guidance for 2003. The quick answer is that you don't --define *heading
styles* to give numbers, that is.

Instead, from the Home ribbon, paragraph group, click the multilevel list
icon and choose one of the list styles that is tied to headings. If your
styles pane is open when you do this, you'll see that your headings now have
numbers. On my computer those numbers are correct out of the box. If yours
are not, from the list styles dropdown, click "define new multilevel list".
Check that the Restart list after... values are correct.

How can I define a heading style in Word 2007 that gives me outline
numbering, eg,

1
1.1
1.2
1.3
2
2.1

When I try to set up the style for the heading, I get this numbering sequence:
1
1.1
2.1
3.1
2
4.1

I have tried modifying & creating a heading style, but am unable to get this
to work. I have done this successfully in all the prior versions of Word,
but not this version.

Before quoting another link, please realize that all the references that
have been mentioned in this discussion area do not apply to Word 2007. The
screen prints show screens that look the same, but are missing several key
fields in Word 2007.

Thanks for any help.
