I didn't say it was good design, just what (I understand) happens! Word's
handling of hyperlinks causes many people problems even without Word
crashes.
Mind you, if Greg crashes Word every day or two he's not likely to be in a
lot of shock. I must say, in passing, that I find crashes to be a bit like
buses - you don't see one for ages and then three come along all at once.
(And note that the "hover
text" [ScreenTip] is covered in my referenced article.]

It's actually slightly worse than Suzanne says. The 'hover text' can be
set
independently of the display text or the url - but the actual url should
be
displayed on the status bar.
Anyway, the problem is caused by the fact that hyperlinks are stored as
relative and your autorecovered file ends up in wherever you set under
Tools
Options File Locations - and the relative hyperlink thus gets based
on
that location.
When you save the recovered document someplace else the hyperlink
becomes
fixed to the autorecover location.
If you save the recovered document into the autorecover files location
the
hyperlinks based on that will remain relative to the document location.
Then
close the file, move it to its original location and reopen it and you
should find that the relative hyperlinks point to the new (and original)
location and all should be well.
