A,
Go to Tools - options - on the edit tab - see if there is a check next to
keep track formatting if there is not check it.
That should help, be aware that every change in format, however small, will
be tracked. This can be a pain because the task pane will get cluttered with
a lot of unsignificant changes. Personally I do not have it turned on.

I am editing quite a large document and I am trying to use styles. I bring
up the styles and formatting box with styles in use selected at the bottom
of the box and it shows a number of styles (Heading 1, Heading 2 etc)
except that when you select one it shows "select all: not currently in
use" for all of them - even when I can see it on the left hand pane. The
"select all" button at the top of the pane is grayed out as well.

Any one any ideas why this is?
