Thanks for your suggestions. Interestingly, when I do that the actual
footnote does not move further down the page closer to the footer area. So
there must be another settings which controls the space between the footnote
and the footer.

The table in the footnote is the culprit:-)... *all* tables in a Word doc
are followed by a ¶ which *cannot* be removed. However you can try either of
at least two things to ease the issue:

1- Select the ¶ and change the font size to 1 pt., or

2- Select the ¶ and use Format Font - Hidden which will cause it to not
display unless non-printing characters are on.

Another thing to consider: If you press Ctrl+Shift+8 to display nonprinting
marks, do you see any undesired contents, such as empty paragraph marks (¶),
in the footnote area?
