DOC FILES ARE BLANK?

Office 2007. Vista. I am finding that Word (*.doc) files, some
relatively new and some more than 10 years old, open completely blank.
Explorer shows there is data in the files.
The same thing seems to be happening with some Excel spreadsheets.
Help and thoughts, please.
