Try
a. using Alt-F9 to reveal the field codes in your Word mail merge main
document
b. where you have

{ MERGEFIELD mynumber }

or

{ MERGEFIELD mynumber \*Mergeformat }

change it to

{ MERGEFIELD mynumber \#0.00 }
