Default Fitting a document

If the document is sized for legal paper (which I take to be what you mean
by "long") and you have Word 2000 or above, select "Scale to paper size:
Letter" in the Print dialog.

but that may not be sufficient information. What are you actually working
with? Changing the page orientation could cause other layout problems.
