Most people would save the document before attempting to close it, but no
matter how you do it, the Save As dialog opens. You then get to choose a
file type at the same time that you choose a filename. I don't have the beta
installed, so I don't know how much the dialog in Word 2007 may differ from
the one in previous versions, but there should be a dropdown box labeled
"Save as type" or something similar.

Are you saving in a backwards-compatible format? When Word 2007 ships,
there
will be converters available, but for now you have to save in Word
97-2003
format.
