Press Escape the moment you see the message appear. That will abort the
attempt to open the server template.
You sometimes can work around the problem by creating a local copy of the
template with the identical name as the one on the remote server. I've had
this work sometimes, but not others. But, it's always worth a try.

We receive documents on a daily basis from client that attach templates
and/or styles to their documents which point to their internal servers.
When we open them Word hangs for about a minute trying to find them, which
when you have hundreds of documents a day can get quite frustrating!
Is there a way I can reduce the timeout Word waits before giving up and
actually opens the document?
