I'm not sure and I don't have Word 2003 around at the moment , so I have no
way to investigate. I agree that it seems wrong from your description. I
believe that List Styles are stored in the registry for Office 2003, so I
wonder if the Word Data Key is corrupt. You could try deleting the Word Data
Key: Word will regenerate a new key when you restart it.

Yes, your workaround worked ok. However, where is the 2003 Customize
dialog? And why, even in my Heading styles, does the Define New
Multilevel List display NONE. I should see the my multilevel list for my
Heading styles. My simple problem with the List Number has led me to
another problem with the Heading styles.

Actually, it says NONE when I modify the List Number style, but even if
I change it to another scheme, there's no way to change the Indent.

rather than Paragraph? Numbering trumps Paragraph when it comes to
