If you check the "Save preview picture" box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties, you get the unreadable preview. Not only that, but saving a
preview picture with the document adds inordinately to the file size. If the
template on which the document is based has a preview picture (Normal.dot
doesn't), then all documents based on the template will by default have a
preview picture. This is just one good reason for checking the "Prompt for
document properties" box on the Save tab of Tools | Options, so that you get
a chance to change this when you first save the file.

Note also that in Word 2002 and 2003, you can increase the size of the File
Open dialog by dragging the window larger or by double-clicking on the title
bar to maximize it (double-click again to restore).

Some docs show up full font size and can be scrolled and read (although

the
actual window is too small) - other docs are an image only showing the

page
which is too tiny to be read. What setting(s) are required to be able to
read all docs?
