Default Prints only color in a document, not the black/white

How many versions of CROW are there to eat. Kodak sent a new print head and
that did the trick. I have many hours trying to diagnose this problem and
maybe a recap will help others learn what I learned.

The print head began to fail in spruts of work then no work. I replaced the
ink cartridges and went thru all the diagnosis on the printer I could, but
one. (main menu, print diagnostic sheet) Every one pointed me to a failure
other than the hardware. When I did the last one the test page printed only
the red Kodak name and nothing else. That sent me back to the hardware guys
that sent me a new print head.

The indications within application pointed to software. ie a "printer not
responding and ink empty" message took forever to display causing me to abort
the activity with cntl/del. Test after test printed only the color text on
the page, not the b/w. I have reloaded the sw so many times I can do it in
my sleep.

Using the "properties" set the computer into a loop. Software indication I
thought.

I hope I did not mislead anybody in my discriptions of the problems. If so
it was because of the intermittent nature of the failure. First it would not
print from Word and then on a shorter document without color text, it did.
Then it would print an Outlook email, then it wouldn't.

Bottom line. Kodak needs to clean up their act with this type of failure.
Probably beyond any human solution tho. I will forgive them if the printer
works.

Thankyou for all your time and assistance. Your questions kept me thinking
and stopped me from selling the printer as a boat anchor. 4 stars!
John

Am I forgiven?

Knowing the version lets us focus on the problem more directly --this let me
check Word 2007 *and* the Kodak 5500. Doing that, I see that there are
others having the identical problem. Only, in the other cases, the letters
they're printing are coming out completely blank, since they contain no
color.

How many black ink tanks does your printer have? Are you positive that you
have blank ink in the tank that Word is trying to use?

If yes... as a work-around, you can use Word's free PDF add-on to create a
pdf version of the document, and then print it from Acrobat Reader (or some
other pdf reader). I would be interested in knowing if this works.

The free Office 2007 PDF add-on is available he

In any case, perhaps he can try some of the most recent suggestions.
This
is a rather perplexing problem.

I might have missed it, but I still don't see which version of WORD
John is using. He said "MS Windows Home", but that is his version of
Windows -- not Word or Office. The version of Office would be
something like Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2000, etc. (and Word
would have the same version number as Office).

My only other suggestion would be to try a driver for a similar
printer to see if that solves the issue... such as the EasyShare
5300, 5100, or the ESP 3.

I presume that John has visited this site, specified the version of
Windows (I'm assuming Windows XP... but I can't be sure, since I'm
not familiar with any of the "Home" editions), downloaded the most
recent drivers and tried them:

I don't think Vista will make any difference. I suspect that the
problem is an adverse inter-action between Word and the Printer
driver that will need a new driver to fix.
.
Without checking back through the thread to check, have you tried
setting the font colour to black (as opposed to the default auto)?

Thanks, I had found that link and downloaded and installed both the
firware mentioned and driver software. No Joy. I am completely
befuddled. I cross posted this problem on the XP General Discussion
under printers, but have not seen a response. That section looks
like it is rarely visited, but I am hopeful. I am reluctant to
upgrade to Vista but that may be my only way to resolve the problem.
What do you think?

OK - but I suspect you are not going to like the answer. Word can
only format a document in a way allowed by the printer driver. The
relationship between Word and the driver is much tighter than is
the case with most other software. Check that the driver (and
firmware) available on line at
http://wwwuk.kodak.com/global/en/ser...dLang uage=en
for your operating system match those that you have and if
necessary upgrade.

Sorry.

safe mode. No difference.
It is all documents. For instance when I try to print a document
from Outlook all I get is the blue print. No black and white.

It is not the printer. A full test of the printer, includint
scanning a document and printing (local on this printer) prints
B/W just fine.

I have tried updating Windows again. No Joy. One of those was a
Kodak fix which I also applied. I reset the system to an earlier
date hoping to eleminate all updates, No Joy.

Will try safe mode again but don't expect to see any difference.

I have reloaded the Kodak driver. No Joy

Updates something called Pdf 995 to version 9. No joy.

I will do anything I am capable of doing but I have decades
missing where computers never existed so I am behind the power
curve understanding how all this stuff plays together.

I appreciate the attemps to date.

What happens if you start Word in Safe mode? Does it print okay
then? (hold the Ctrl key as Word is starting; when the safe mode
prompt appears, click Yes).

I don't know where to turn. I called Kodak product support

Cannot figure where the problem is or how to resolve it. I
have a Kodak 5500
printer which has work flawlessly. It prints documents OK
from other applications.

Here is what it does. When I print it a document (one that
I have printed in the past without problems) all I get is
the words highlighted in color. The rest is blank.

Hints; The only changes I have made to my system is to go
to Chrome as a browser. Also, I recieved a excell document
and opened it but did not try to
print it. Any ideas?
