I searched my local drives for *.acl files, but for some reason, the .acl
files in my Application Data folders were not found..

The files storing the autocorrect entries are
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot
and
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\mso1033.acl
I think you miss them, so you are confused.
