Default .docx file extension

Thank you very much, Terry. I followed your road map, cleared the appropriate
check box, and now all of my Word 2007 documents have the file extention
..docx.

Well the problem is caused by the idiots who decided that the default
settings for WINDOWS is to 'Hide Extension for Known File Types'. This is a
basic security risk and I recommend that you change this immediately.

Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options and select the View tab.
Scroll down until you find Hide extensions for know file types and clear the
check box; click APPLY at the bottom of that dialog and close it.

Note that in someone's wisdom, the Menu Bar is hidden by default in Windows
Explorer (in Vista and Windows 7). Press the ALT key to unhide and use it.
You can make it permanent if you open the ORGANIZE menu, select LAYOUT and
click Menu Bar.

I thank you all for your responses. When I save a document, the .docx
extention does not appear in the file name. Furthermore, in the "Save as
type" drop down list, .docx does not even appear. Do I have a problem
here?

If you don't do anything special, when you save a document in Word 2007,
you
will get a file with the .docx extension, as that is the default file
format
for Word 2007. In order to save in the older .doc format, you have to
specifically choose "Word 97-2003 Document."

Hi,

I am using Word 2007. How do I save a document in Word 2007 with the
file
extension .docx, and what does the file extension .docx mean?

Thank you.
