Hmmm. I downloaded the file from the internet, and hyperlinked to it from
Word 2007. The file opened as expected (albeit after a security warning) in
Acrobat (which is associated with PDF files here). If PDF is correctly
associated with Acrobat or Reader I cannot account for the problem.

I actually opened the document in OpenOffice 3.1 and can get it to work no
problems. That suggests to me it's not Adobe Reader or else it would have
the
same problem under OpenOffice.

Associate Adobe Reader/Acrobat with PDF files on your PC
Open Adobe Acrobat Reader and click Edit, Preferences. Choose Internet in
the Preferences window. Uncheck Display PDF in browser option and close
the
dialog. Repeat the same and this time, enable the Display PDF in browser
option.

Not sure if this is related but in Windows explorer the pdf document
appa.pdf displays under the "Type" heading that it's an "OmniPage Image
File"
