repeat a variable header row in a table
I have several reports with very long tables (50 pages) with multiple
sub-sections of varying length. Current heading is the column titles repeating each page. Each sub-section has a "Header" row merging all cells. Some sub-sections span several pages. The client wants the sub-section heading to repeat on each page. Previously done manually but got messed up before final printing as margins changed. Is there any way to have it done "auto". (There are several iterations of the report in the approval process that change table length) |

repeat a variable header row in a table
One way to approach this would be to put part of the heading in the document
header (the table would have to be in a separate section). This could be done in two ways: 1. Put the column headings in the header. Then split the table each time there's a new subsection heading and tag its merged heading row as the heading to repeat. 2. Have the column headings as the repeating rows for the entire table. Insert the subsection heading row once where it begins and repeat it in the header with a StyleRef field. You'd need to use "Different first page" formatting for the section so that the first subsection heading would not appear on the first page. Option 2 would probably be easier because it wouldn't be necessary to put the subsection heading (StyleRef) in a table, and the top and header margins could therefore be adjusted to allow the heading to ride just at the top of the table. If you put the column headings (in a table row) in the header, Word will insist on an empty text paragraph following the table, and you'll have to format it as Hidden text. -- Suzanne S. I do like the second option - unfortunately - and I did not mention it in my
initial document, the client required the completed document on their template with their standard headers. "Suzanne S.
