Default Word 2007

Today after two months, I will finally get back my old hard drive with
Office2003 -- which means I've been using 2007 willy-nilly all this
time -- and I'm sure I used the "legacy" approach some time recently!

Not in my version of Word 2007. There are no "toolbars." When the header or
footer is active, the contextual Header and Footer Tools Design tab is
displayed. Page Number is the third button in the Header & Footer group. But
the menu it displays is far different from the Insert | Page Numbers dialog
in previous versions. Tall4 is describing the Format Page Numbers dialog,
which doesn't actually insert the page number. To insert a simple PAGE field
at a given position, you have to choose Current Position | Plain Number.

Just as in Word2003, when you are Viewing Headers & Footers, the
Header & Footer toolbar appears, and the first icon on it is still
"insert page number."

Following all of the self-help advice Word 2007 provides for adding a
page
number in a footer, I notice it keeps not telling how to actually add the
number. So, ... how do you do it exactly? Because the advice is not
working, nor are we able to add a new page number following the
information I
have pasted below and found in "help" within Word 2007.

"Documents that do not yet use page numbers
Follow the steps in this article for inserting page numbers.
Double-click in the header or footer area.
Under Header & Footer Tools, on the Design tab, in the Options group,
select
the Different First Page check box.
In the Header & Footer group, click Page Number, and then click Format
Page
Numbers.
In the Start at box, type 0.
If you want the first page to use a header or footer that does not
include a
page number, insert the header or footer that you want while the cursor
is in
the First Page Header or First Page Footer area. "

And, please don't say it's easy. We have each worked this information
from
several different angles and still we are not able to input an automatic
page
number in the footer of any document we work. I gotta say, I am wanting
to
return to the older version as it is much easier to get things formatted
than
this new version Word 2007.

Take it from a frustrated novice viewpoint please!
