Default Word 2007 - How To Edit a Main Document

I have inherited some Word templates (2003 format, .dot files) that
try to open a .txt file and perform a merge when the file is opened.
They present the following message when the template is opened, either
when opening the template within Word in File - Open or when creating
a new document based on the template:

Opening this document will run the following SQL command:

SELECT * FROM c:\datasource.txt

Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want to
continue?

Here's my problem: I want to just edit the template. There is some
information in there that I need to be able to update but I don't want
to actually perform this action and do any merging. If I tell Word
that I don't want to continue I can update the template and save it as
a Word 2003 .dot file, but when I re-open it (or make a new document
based on it) it is no longer asking me where the c:\datasource.txt
file is, which makes me believe that it's no longer associated with
the datasource.

Is there a way I can just open up, edit and save this document
template without having to experience the merge process or be forced
to try to find this text file?

Just answer Yes. That will not cause the merge to actually be performed and
you can then edit the template and save it so that it can then be used for a
mail merge.

You can prevent that message from appearing by following the steps in the
article:

Hope this helps.
