Default How do I encircle a number or a letter?

I am trying to set up a template to help others understand how to work
through a set of calculations. I want to have the encircled numbers in order
to indicate that 5 is multiplied by 3 and then subtracted by 7 for example.
I want to place each number in a circle to avoid confusion in places where a
number is added, multiplied etc. with another amount instead of a previously
calculated quantity. Thanks if you can help.

Arial Unicode has circled numbers from 1 to 20. An alternative is to put a
border around the number; it would be a box instead of a circle though and
may not work with versions before W2002.

I only just noticed that in the Font part of the Home tab, I have
buttons for putting a character, a selection, or a whole line in a
box, or a character in a circle. Are they there only because I have
Japanese installed? or does everyone have them? (They work for
ordinary letters.)

I don't have those buttons in my font group. But the border button in the
paragraph group would put a box around as little as a single character.

Yes, the Enclose Characters command is part of the support for East Asian
languages, I believe.
