Default page numbering

When I insert a page, the normal setting is for the page number to be on
the right and not to number the first page. Is there a way i can set the
default to have the page number centered and set the default to putting
the page number on the first page?

Well, the "normal" (out-of-the-box) setting is not to show any page numbers at
all.

If you mean that you altered the Normal.dot template so your "new blank
document" shows what you describe, or if you're using another template that you
created, then you need to make a couple of changes in that template:

- There is no page number on the first page because the "Different first page"
option is checked in the File Page Setup Layout dialog, and there isn't any
{PAGE} field in the first page header or footer. Uncheck that option to make the
first page like the other pages.

- The page number on the other pages is on the right because that's where the
field is -- probably because there are two tab characters preceding it. Turn on
nonprinting characters (click the ¶ button on the toolbar or press Ctrl+Shift+8)
so you can see the tabs. Delete one of them.

If it actually is the Normal.dot template that you modified, that's not a good
idea -- the header and/or footer will interfere with its use in the Labels
dialog if you ever use that.

Jay, I believe Don meant that when he inserts a page *number* (using Insert
| Page Numbers), the default is top right and unnumbered first page.

No, Don, there is no way to change those defaults. But the rest of what Jay
told you is sound, and you should incorporate it in a new document template
(NOT Normal.dot) and use that template as the basis for new documents.

You may want to read http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm to
learn more about how to use headers and footers for more than just page
numbers.
