Default Drop caps

Drop caps are inserted using a frame. The frame is not part of the paragraph
style. Word does a pretty good job of protecting this frame from anything
you might do to its paragraph alone, but if you select text that includes
the drop cap (that is, includes some text both before and after the drop
cap) and reapply the style and reset the font, the drop cap will be lost
(though it will become a separate paragraph). This is pretty far-fetched and
probably not what's happening in your case, however.

I don't think that's the cause. Usually the changes I make are not even on the same pages as the dropped drop caps.

What version of Word is this? Unless you've reported this repeatedly, we've
seen several reports of this problem lately, and I'm wondering if it's
something new in Word 2007.
