Default Auto Text in Headers / Footers

I use Auto Text to enter the file name of new documents in a footer. For
some reason this option has greyed out and is no longer available. I think
it is due to some general problems I've been having with the normal.dot
template?

Any ideas on how to activate this feature?

Rename you normal.dot template to normal.old and then restart Word and see
if the problem is solved.
