Default Paragraph numbering

I have a document with styles applied as per below

8.0 This is my chapter heading (Heading 1)
8.1 This is a Major heading (Heading 2)
8.1.01 This is text that looks like body text and is really a sort of
numbered paragraph.

I cannot get the automatic numbering correct on the "text that looks
like body text" when assigning it the style Body Text, I have to
assign it Heading 3 style.

Am I doing something wrong when trying to apply the Body Text style
and then trying to associate a numbering regime or must it be a
Heading style for the numbering to work correctly?

You can include any paragraph style in an outline list. Just be sure to set
up numbering correctly. If you are using Word 2003, the article at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html explains
this in detail. If you are using Word 2007, post back for details.

Stefan thanks for the link but it does not explain how to number
paragraphs within a outlined document. Using Shaun's approach Outline
numbering only works with headings so therefore I woudl need to apply
a heading style to body text - which seems counter intuitive.

You can include any paragraph styles in an outline as long as you set it up
carefully (as explained in Shauna Kelly's article). For example, you can use
just headings (which is done in Shauna's example) or you can mix headings
and non-headings, or you can use just non-headings. It's up to you to define
the outline list the way you want it.
