Default Changes made to Styles are not being saved

I inherited a Word 2000 document and went about making changes to the various
Styles. I then saved the document.
However, when I re-open it, the styles went back to the original. How can I
prevent this from happening?

I am using Word 2000.

Thanks,
Melissa

Open the document and uncheck automatically update styles from tools
templates and add-ins.
