Default leader dots with blanks

I have a toc with tabs-left aligned leader(3.75") and right aligned leader
tabs. I get a blank space between tabs all the way down the page, i.e.

chapter 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1
chapter 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2

How do I get rid of the space at the tab (3.75")?

I have multiple times. I have even taken a blank document and formatted tabs
with leader dots and get the spaces even then.

From the example you have given, I get the impression that you have more than
one tab set but there doesn't seem to be a reason for the 1st tab which is
why you are getting a space. If you delete the first tab does this sort out
the problem?

yes, if I take the tab out completely the problem goes away. But I would
like the tab there, because I come back later and type info in on various
lines at that tab stop and really don't want to put a tab in on each line
individually.

If you have the extra tab, you'll get the space - that's the way it works.
