Use the Sort command. In Word 2003 or earlier it's on the Table menu
(although the text doesn't have to be in a table to sort it); in Word
2007 it's in the Paragraph group on the Home ribbon.

What kind of list are you referring to? If items are in a table, you can sort on
a particular column. If the items are in the body of the document, you can sort
on the selected paragraphs.
