I am trying to use StyleRef to display 3 different levels of style headings
I have. I am displaying the Chapter name and Part I, II, III (etc) in the
header using StyleRef and Headings 1 and 2. Pertinent to this question, I am
displaying the subsection name in the footer with StyleRef using Heading 3.
My problem is that some areas of my long document do not have a section name
or there is no "part I" because there's no "part II" (and so it would be
silly to have "Part I" when it is the only part!). I tried putting in
subsection names and marking them as heading 3, then hiding them with
Font-Hidden Text, so I could still have something displayed in my footer but
not have to enter redundant subsection names and part names. But when I hid
the text, the StyleRef field turned up blank. This might actually be fine,
but I want to know if there's some other way to get StyleRef to show what I
describe above.

Unfortunately, Hidden is the only font formatting that a StyleRef field
*does* pick up. You can format the text as Font Color: White and very small
(1 point), and StyleRef will pick it up and display it normally.
