Default how to renumber word figures

I have a set of Word docs that each contain auto-numbered figure captions
starting at 1, and embedded cross-references within the text body.

I want to merge these files into a single document with a continuous running
index of all figures. How do I force a re-number of the figures?

Note: I created the 'master' document by copy-paste from each sub-document.
Is there a better way to merge these docs that will take care of my figure
numbering issue too?
