Default Cant open any of my worddocs frm "My documents" I jst get grey?

When I go to "My Documents" and double click on any of my Word Docs to open
them, all I get is a blank grey screen.
What do I need to do to correct this so that my documents will open up? this
also makes it difficult for me to send any word docs as attachments in emails.
