Default Word should let me exclude identified text from the word count

Is it possible to identify text that can then be excluded from the word count
? I'm currently using Word for academic assignment assembly and current
academic assessment rules allow exclusion of all academic citations from the
word count. On large submissions I do not want to have to manually count all
the words associated with citation and then deduct this from the word count
total. Alternatively if I could highlight the text I do not want counted when
initially inserted Word could accurately calculate the count for me. I
believe the rule on citation exclusion applies to all tertiary education
submissions so this feature may be helpful for lots of global users.
